Water and Wastewater Management

Importance

(GRI 3-3a., GRI 3-3b.)

Water resources are essential for OR’s operations, both in the Mobility and Lifestyle business groups. This includes water usage, which in some areas may face the risk of water scarcity due to internal and external factors, as well as the management of wastewater and effluent from various activities that must comply with legal standards and regulations. In addition, water management must consider the expectations of relevant stakeholders.

Therefore, OR emphasizes great importance on water management, starting with the assessment of risks related to water resources, including its operations, and the management of wastewater generated by the company’s activities. This ensures that the business can operate continuously without disruption, maximizing water resources use efficiently while avoiding negative impacts on the environment and surrounding communities.

Management Approach

Water Management

OR promotes the concept of maximizing the sustainable use of natural resources, with water being one of the crucial resources. Therefore, OR emphasizes managing the water used in the company’s operations by integrating into QSHE policy and annual target. OR has established water management as the following:

  • The implementation of effective water management ensures minimal impacts on business operations by utilizing international standards such as AQUEDUCT and the Water Risk Filter. These tools are used for water use assessment to identify opportunities for water efficiency improvements. The water sources utilized by OR include tap water and groundwater. The assessment results show that 70.3% of the company’s facilities are located in Water Stress Areas. OR manages water usage in its production processes efficiently, recycling water, focusing on water conservation, and implementing technology for water management. The Company also takes responsibility for water use throughout its supply chain, such as treating wastewater for reuse and campaigning to raise awareness among office areas to use water responsibly. This aims to minimize the impact of water resource use in operations and mitigate the impact to surrounding societies, communities and living being.
  • The water use assessment was conducted to identify opportunities for water efficiency improvements which take environmental aspect into account via ISO 14001:2015 which is audited annually. Data on water consumption from all operation areas have been consistently recorded on the Web-Application: PTT Group SSHE Performance Database. This record is regularly summarized and analyzed to compare water consumption with the established targets to reduce water use by using QSHE controlling target and these targets apply to all establishments.
  • In addition, OR also monitors both internal and external water factors, such as regulations, water quantity, water quality, and water policies. This includes collaboration with the PTT Group, external organizations, and relevant government agencies to manage and promote sustainable water management.

In addition to the water management approaches aforementioned, OR has also implemented action to reduce water consumption at office buildings and relevant establishments, such as LPG cylinder refurbishing plants in all areas, factories within OASYS lifestyle business centers area, and certain petrol stations, which have installed water treatment systems for water recycling. Furthermore, in 2024, OR established organizational targets to reduce water use at each establishment. OR integrated and linked the concept of efficient water consumption across all establishments through the PI Idea project (Productivity Improvement), fostering a culture of continuous improvement and development among employees and departments to meet the organization’s sustainable development goals. The evaluation criteria include projects that yield results in Triple bottom-line business operations, emphasizing the importance of the 3Ps (Planet, People, Performance). Water reduction is considered under the Planet pillar, which OR prioritizes. Additionally, awareness training on water efficiency management is conducted for employees through the SSHE 1 Training course.

Wastewater Management

OR complies with all applicable environmental laws, international standards, and procedures. Therefore, all operations completely comply with regulations. Enhancement of wastewater management details are shown as the following:

  • OR has invested in improving wastewater treatment processes according to the type of effluent, ensuring that the water quality meets the prescribed standards and regulations before being discharged into the environment with controlled parameters such as biochemical oxygen demand (BOD), chemical oxygen demand (COD), pH, suspended solids (SS), and total dissolved solids (TDS) at all of OR’s establishments. Moreover, wastewater quality is regularly monitored by both third parties and OR’s laboratory, ensuring compliance through frequent inspections and audits.
  • OR has developed a Centralized Wastewater Treatment System to focus on reducing wastewater generation and implemented this system at renovated and new branches of PTT Stations. This system, coupled with water discharge controls, ensures compliance with regulatory and legal requirements before discharging into the public drainage system.
  • OR has installed a wastewater treatment plant and a recycled water treatment plant, utilizing technologies such as Sequencing Batch Reactor (SBR) for wastewater treatment and Ultrafiltration (UF) for water reuse and zero discharge. This system is implemented at the factories within lifestyle business center (OASYS). It also complies with legal requirements, as per the Regulation of the Ministry of Industry, which mandates that factories in the Chao Phraya River area in Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya must have a high-efficiency wastewater treatment system that enables complete water reuse or a system to prevent leakage of water into public water sources. The water management system of the lifestyle business center (OASYS) helps reduce environmental impacts, prevent wastewater and contaminants from leaking into the environment, increase water recycling, and reduce the need of external (third-party) water withdrawal in the production process. This contributes to the long-term sustainability of water resources and the environment.
  • In addition, OR has installed a water circulation system at all LPG cylinder refurbishing plants to reuse water used in the Hydrostatic Test and Expansion Test processes of LPG cylinders. The water is recycled for reuse in the same testing processes, reducing the need of external (third-party) water withdrawal and providing an efficient approach to water management.

OR implements the application of water recycling, focusing on the reuse of non-contaminated water from general use (Grey Water), rainwater harvesting, and cooling towers, as well as actions to improve wastewater quality, such as effluent monitoring, improvements, and periodic sampling. Key projects to enhance wastewater management efficiency include:

  • Project of implementation of water management practice in OR businesses i.e. OASYS lifestyle business centers, LPG cylinder refurbishing plants, Phra Khanong Office Building, and PTT Stations in Chiang Khan branch, Wangchan branch, Western Outer Ring Road (inbound) branch, and Vibhavadi 62 branch.
  • OR invested in Ultra Filtration Recycle System for PTT Station Vibhavadi 62 branch. This system has no chemical use and water can be recycled for watering plants complying with the standard of US EPA.

To ensure that wastewater quality meets discharge standards in all areas and does not impact the environment or nearby communities, OR has established regular monitoring of wastewater quality. Based on the monitoring results conducted by the Mobile Lab, no non-compliance with wastewater quality regulations was found in 2024. Additionally, OR provides channels for complaints and feedback from the general public through the Contact Center 1365 and Website. If any issues related to wastewater management are identified, the complaints/feedback will be used to further improve management processes.

In addition, to reduce the use of chemicals and residual substances in wastewater discharged from business operations, OR has chosen to use ENVICCO cleaning products, which are environmentally friendly, at PTT Stations and Café Amazon branches operated by OR. These products are designed to naturally decompose, reducing the use of chemicals and chemical residue in the environment. Furthermore, the products are made available for sale to customers to promote the use of environmentally friendly products.
